About

Ishani Bachawat is a textile designer and multimedia artist from Kolkata, India.

Using textiles, painting, installation and text she weaves narratives of the body in space. The artist considers the relationship between body and space as symbiotic. She observes bodies in space – spaces that embrace and spaces that eject; spaces that restrict growth and spaces that enable growth; spaces that evolve with bodies and spaces that stagnate with bodies; bodies that corrupt and bodies that heal; bodies that are divided by space and bodies that divide space. Observing such spaces through a cultural and gendered lens, she critically engages in a discourse that tries to subvert pervasive power dynamics and gives hope for the possibility of new worlds.
