This project draws parallels between betel leaves (“paan” in Hindi) and playing cards (specifically the heart suit also know as “paan”). Betel leaves are chewed along with other spices as a mouth freshener. A gouty aspect of this cultural practice is that it is often spit out on walls and pavements, leaving behind a red stain. Another common site is people playing cards and gambling on the streets, throwing down cards with great enthusiasm. In this piece I try to capture the similarities between both these practices – the motion, movement and chaos – in a 4-way repeat.
